About Me...
Teaching and writing are my passions. I teach Intro to Journalism, Journalism 2, Production, & Editing, and Creative Writing 1 & 2. I also teach Public Speaking some semesters. I advise five student publications: The Talon newspaper, (both online & print) Voices literary magazine (online and print), and Red & Black news magazine. In addition, I sponsor Caffeine Scene, and I co-sponsor Quill & Scroll Honorary Society with Mr. Rick Solt. In addition, I serve on the board of the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association, and I generally have students on my staffs that serve with me.
Education: After earning a B.A. in English/Education at the University of Kentucky, I taught for six years in St. Louis, MO and for two years in Charlotte after my family moved to North Carolina. After earning a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Queens University, I began teaching at NFHS. This is my eleventh year at the school, and I enjoy offering students opportunities to grow and learn, publish their work and use their voices, win awards, and take on leadership roles.
Writing: My own writing has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, Southern Poetry Review, The Atlanta Review, storySouth, Kakalak, and numerous journals and anthologies. Finishing Line Press published "Port Desire," my book of poetry, in 2013.
Books & Movies: I am a proud a literary nerd. I'm a fan of literary books and movies (including the novel "All the Light I Cannot See," the movie "Chocolat," and a collection of essays "The Anthropocene Reviewed" by John Green). I especially enjoy narratives in a series (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, Hunger Games, and Lord of the Rings) and the writing of poets, including Dorianne Laux, Mary Oliver, Cathy Smith Bowers, Marjorie Stelmach and many more.
My family enjoys hiking and camping -- I am a nature-lover and a dog-lover (just ask my rascally mini goldendoodle Weasley). I'm also passionate about travel -- the above photo I took the first time I was in Rome. I take students with me all over the world. Want to travel? Join me!
